The Minnesota Vikings have named Kyler Murray the starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2026 season, with former starter J.J. McCarthy transitioning to the backup role. Head Coach Kevin O'Connell announced the decision following training camp on Tuesday, confirming initial reports.

"We did name Kyler Murray our starting quarterback," O'Connell told reporters after practice. "From the outset of the offseason we've been intentional, open about the goal of creating a competitive environment filled with wildly capable players that could then elevate our quarterback room."

Murray, who joined the Vikings from the Arizona Cardinals last year, signed a one-year, $13 million contract. His future with the team beyond this season remains uncertain as his contract allows him to leave in free agency. This situation underscores the importance of McCarthy's development throughout the upcoming season.

O'Connell emphasized that McCarthy remains a vital part of the team's quarterback room. "Nothing changes as far as J.J. being an incredibly important member of our quarterback room and our team," he stated. When asked if McCarthy would be the backup, O'Connell confirmed, "Yes, you'll see him still take a ton of reps today."

Mccarthy was selected by the Vikings with the tenth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He arrived in Minnesota after winning a national championship with Michigan, but his collegiate statistics did not fully align with his high draft position. Despite this, NFL scouts recognized his potential.

Mccarthy missed his entire rookie season due to injury. In his second year and first season of play, he started ten games, throwing 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. O'Connell expressed confidence in McCarthy's future, stating, "He's a young player with a bunch of outstanding things in his future. The immediate result wasn't what he wanted, but he's going to be ready to go and improve."

The team anticipates McCarthy will continue to develop while on the bench. His progression this season is considered crucial, especially given Murray's contract status.
