The Minnesota Vikings have named Kyler Murray their starting quarterback, opting over first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy. The decision came quickly after the team acquired Murray, a former No. 1 overall pick, and prior to their first preseason game.
Sources within the Vikings organization expressed concerns about McCarthy's predictability during training camp, according to CBS Sports. These individuals reportedly felt that McCarthy, who missed his rookie season due to a knee injury and showed inconsistency in 2025, did not consistently demonstrate the qualities of a franchise quarterback. Some even suggested that undrafted free agent Max Brosmer might have been a more reliable option for the starting role.
McCarthy completed 57.6% of his passes for 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 10 games during the 2025 season, with the Vikings holding a 6-4 record in those starts. Despite flashes of good play, his quarterback rating was among the lowest for signal-callers with over 155 pass attempts.
Murray, who previously played for the Arizona Cardinals, now takes the helm of the Vikings' offense under head coach Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell has a history of revitalizing quarterbacks' careers, notably with Sam Darnold in 2024, who went on to win the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks. McCarthy, at 23, is considered young and still has potential for development, but faces a significant proving period.
In their initial preseason action against the New York Giants, Murray led the opening series, completing two of three passes and contributing to a scoring drive. McCarthy went 4-of-7 for 34 yards, while Carson Wentz, competing for the backup position, completed 6-of-11 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.
The Vikings' new general manager, Nolan Teasley, is not tied to McCarthy's draft selection, as the previous GM, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, was fired this past offseason. McCarthy will now operate as a backup, needing to demonstrate improved game management and consistency to potentially earn a starting role in the future, either with the Vikings or another team.
