Vikings Coach O'Connell Reflects on "Emotional" J.J. McCarthy Trade to Giants
Minnesota's head coach expresses respect for the former first-round pick following his departure to New York.
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell described Monday as a "tough day" after the team traded quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, to the New York Giants. O'Connell stated he has "tremendous respect" for McCarthy as both a player and a person.
The trade, which sent the former Michigan standout to New York in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick, occurred as the Giants seek depth at quarterback with Jaxson Dart sidelined for the season due to knee surgery.
During a press conference at the Vikings facility, O'Connell shared that his interaction with McCarthy that morning was "emotional." He emphasized the significance of their relationship and his gratitude for their one-on-one time. "These situations are never easy," O'Connell said. "From a standpoint of being the head coach, you understand hard decisions in the NFL. I understand them firsthand, going back a long way for me personally, but at the same time, it’s always going to be about the relationship."
McCarthy's tenure with the Vikings did not meet initial expectations, but O'Connell reiterated his support for the young quarterback. "Today’s a tough day. Nothing about this changes the way I feel about J.J. or the hopes I have for him," he stated. "I think it’s a good opportunity in New York and, as I told him, I’ll be pulling for him like crazy to see him go and do well, and apply a lot of the things that we talked about over his period of time here."
McCarthy is not expected to be an immediate starter for the Giants. Head coach John Harbaugh, whose brother Jim Harbaugh coached McCarthy at Michigan, confirmed that Jameis Winston will begin the upcoming game against the Cardinals as the team's starting quarterback.
