Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has expressed strong approval for the New York Jets' general manager, Darren Mougey, citing his former San Diego State college roommate's strategic approach to the team's offseason moves.

O'Connell, who played alongside Mougey at San Diego State, noted that he frequently sent congratulatory messages to Mougey throughout the Jets' offseason, acknowledging their successful draft and handling of internal team matters, such as the contract extension for running back Breece Hall.

"I just think the plan that he’s had has been really well thought-out," O'Connell said. "It’s one thing — a lot of teams put the time and the energy in to have as much good planning as you can — but it’s about the execution of those plans. The way Darren has gone about it doesn’t surprise me."

O'Connell, known for his quarterback development skills, added that Mougey's preparedness is evident. "He’s not afraid to make difficult decisions, and I think that’s because it’s in alignment with the process that he has. He’s attempting to execute a vision that he has for that organization. As a former Jet, it’s always good to see the organization in good hands — and they certainly are with Darren and A.G. (head coach Aaron Glenn)."

The Jets' strategy under Mougey has involved acquiring draft picks, re-signing key offensive players like Hall and guard Joe Tippmann to extensions through 2027, and bringing in new talent through the draft and free agency. The team reportedly signed six new defensive starters and drafted three players in the first round, including pass-catchers Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. They also added veteran quarterback Geno Smith as a stopgap.

O'Connell's own coaching philosophy, which emphasizes building an offense capable of generating completions and setting up explosive plays regardless of the quarterback, seems to align with the Jets' approach of placing complementary pieces around their quarterback situation. "What we’ve tried to do is put together a world where the quarterback — whoever is in the game for us — can prepare and simply do their job," O'Connell explained. "When you get quality play at that position — and what that looks like can look a lot different depending on guys’ skill set — it just leads to so many avenues to your team having a chance to win different types of games."

O'Connell is scheduled to participate in the American Century Championship golf tournament from July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, where he will be a first-time competitor. The event will be televised on NBC Sports and features over 90 competitors, including NFL coaches Mike Macdonald and Robert Saleh. The tournament has a history of raising funds for charity.
