Viking FK Prepares for Champions League Clash with Aston Villa

Norwegian club Viking FK is set to face Aston Villa in the Champions League, buoyed by a recent 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich. The Stavanger-based club, whose squad value is a fraction of their German opponents, achieved a remarkable 2-0 halftime lead before securing a last-minute equalizer.

Aston Villa has also had a strong start to their European campaign, defeating Club Brugge and Fenerbahce. The English club is looking to build on their Europa League trophy win from the previous season.

Viking's journey to this point has been marked by an unusual coaching approach, with Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim and Morten Jensen sharing joint head coaching responsibilities since January 2021. The pair, who previously coached separate teams while working in banking and the oil and gas industry, have guided the club to its first Eliteserien title in 34 years in 2025. Their shared vision and encouragement for players to 'dream bigger' have been central to their success.

This Champions League appearance is Viking FK's first since 1992. The club's sporting director, Erik Nevland, highlighted the team's surprise performance against Bayern, noting the early goal and the overall excitement of the match.

Viking's academy emphasizes potential, a strong desire to succeed, and dedication. The club also values players with a deep connection to the club and the Stavanger region, citing homegrown midfielder Simen Kvia-Egeskog, whose grandfather is a club legend, as an example of this philosophy.

Despite the challenge of playing at Villa Park, Viking's performance against Bayern Munich suggests they are prepared to compete and will not be intimidated by the occasion. The club's fans are also expected to provide fervent support, having reportedly set off fireworks outside the Bayern Munich hotel prior to their recent match in an effort to disrupt their sleep.
