Vietnam's Coastal Gem: Quy Nhon Beckons Travelers with Untouched Beauty

While many established destinations grace travel lists, the Vietnamese coastal city of Quy Nhon has emerged as a noteworthy pick for its blend of natural beauty, historical sites, and authentic local culture. This industrial city of 500,000, situated on Vietnam's central south coast, was recently included in Lonely Planet's annual list of best destinations.

Quy Nhon offers travelers an escape from the well-trodden paths of Hanoi, Hoi An, and Da Nang, presenting what locals describe as a more authentic Vietnamese experience. The city is accessible via a one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City or by the Reunification Express train.

Historical and Spiritual Sites

Among its attractions are the Banh It hilltop towers, a collection of 11th-century Cham structures that are said to represent a miniature model of the universe. These redbrick buildings, remarkably preserved despite centuries of neglect, offer panoramic views of the coast and the city below. The entry fee is a nominal 55 pence.

Another significant site is the Long Khanh Pagoda, located in the heart of Quy Nhon. Local guides express a sense of mystery as to why fewer Western tourists venture to the region, given its offerings.

Pristine Beaches and Local Flavors

Beyond its historical sites, Quy Nhon boasts beaches that have yet to experience mass tourism. The main Quy Nhon beach provides clear waters and is bordered by relaxed bars, where a day lounger can cost as little as £2. Inland, the city center features quaint streets with affordable restaurants offering freshly caught seafood for around £5.

Short drives north and south of the city reveal more secluded and striking coastal areas. Ky Co Beach is noted for its turquoise waters and is popular among locals for snorkeling its unspoiled reefs, with an entry fee of £3.

Nearby, the fishing village of Nhon Hai offers seafood restaurants and boats to the islet of Hon Kho. This small island is ideal for snorkeling and paddleboarding in its aquamarine waters and around accessible reefs. Day tours to Hon Kho, guided by locals, are available for approximately £15.

The village of Eo Gio, characterized by whitewashed buildings with blue-painted doors and window frames, provides a picturesque setting reminiscent of Santorini.

Further exploration leads to the seaside village of Bai Xep, known for its tranquil, uncrowded sands and charming guesthouses. Local seafood eateries here display their fresh catches, including live lobsters.

Accommodation and Hospitality

For a more upscale experience, the Anantara Quy Nhon Villas is situated about ten miles south of the city. General manager Michael Wirz, a resident of Vietnam for 13 years, emphasizes the authentic nature of the region.
