Vietnam Accused of Abducting Activists in Cambodia

A pro-democracy organization, Viet Tan, has accused the Vietnamese government of abducting two of its members, an Australian and a Norwegian citizen, in Cambodia and forcibly returning them to Vietnam. Vietnamese authorities confirmed the arrest of Tran Hiep and Nguyen Duc Thuan, stating they entered Vietnam using forged documents and intended to carry out terrorist activities. Viet Tan has denied these allegations, calling them a "blatant fabrication" to hide the fact that the activists were abducted in Cambodia.

The group stated that Tran and Nguyen were traveling in the southern Cambodian district of Kaoh Andaet when they disappeared on September 18. Tran's wife, Chloe Dang, told Australian media that her husband was meeting pro-democracy activists in Cambodia and had no plans to travel to Vietnam. He was scheduled to meet her in Bangkok for a flight back to Australia but never arrived.

Vietnamese state media reported that Tran and Nguyen were detained with a third individual, identified as Thai Cong Truong Son, at the Tay Ninh province border on September 18. The report claimed the trio confessed to being members of the "terrorist organisation 'Viet Tan'" and using forged documents to enter Vietnam for "terrorist and sabotage activities." All three have been charged with membership in a terrorist organization, and an investigation is ongoing.

Viet Tan has condemned the alleged actions as a "serious act of transnational repression" that violates Cambodia's sovereignty and international law. Phil Robertson, Director of Asia Human Rights and Labor Advocates, characterized Vietnam's alleged actions as an "unacceptable outrage" and stated that Hanoi is a "vicious and pernicious practitioner of transnational repression."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that consular support is being provided to Tran's family. Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities have been contacted for comment.
