A video circulating online shows a woman removing uncovered trays of bread from the trunk of her car and carrying them into a Subway restaurant in Calumet City, Illinois. The footage was recorded by an individual parked nearby.
The woman, who was not wearing a uniform, face covering, or gloves, was seen dressed in casual attire as she handled the bread. She then handed the trays to a man who took them inside the establishment.
Following the video's release on X, formerly Twitter, viewers expressed concerns about sanitation practices. Some commenters suggested that such methods are not uncommon among some franchise owners due to supply chain issues, while others questioned the cleanliness of the food preparation.
This incident follows other reported concerns regarding food safety at Subway locations. In February, a Subway in Pittsburgh received several health code violations, including improper food storage. Last year, a Subway outlet in Augusta received a failing health inspection score attributed to a lack of food safety knowledge and the absence of a certified food safety manager.
Subway has experienced a decline in its US presence, with 729 locations closing in 2025. The Daily Mail has contacted Subway for comment on the Illinois incident.
