Video Shows Santa Ana Police Repeatedly Punching Man During Arrest

A viral video captures Santa Ana police officers repeatedly punching Florentino Lopez, a 28-year-old man who is reportedly on felony probation and subject to search and seizure. The incident occurred on October 1.

According to John Kremer, Lopez's attorney, the encounter began when officers saw Lopez and a relative smoking marijuana on their front lawn. The officers reportedly motioned for Lopez to approach them in the street, which he did. Kremer stated that Lopez complied with their request and that, while words were exchanged, there was no physical resistance from his client.

The video shows Lopez standing against a police vehicle, not yet handcuffed, when one officer pulls him to the ground and begins striking him. A second officer then joins in, also delivering blows. Kremer believes the charges against Lopez, which include felony and misdemeanor counts of resisting an officer, should be dismissed.

Lopez has also been accused of walking in the roadway and using marijuana on school or daycare property. He was arrested on Oct. 1 and remained in custody until appearing in court on Monday, where a judge set his bail at $20,000.

Santa Ana Police Chief Robert Rodriguez stated that the department is conducting a comprehensive review of the incident. This review includes examining body-worn camera footage, incident reports, and the circumstances surrounding the arrest. Santa Ana Mayor Valerie Amezcua also indicated that she is looking into the matter.
