A resurfaced video capturing Dr. Anthony Fauci and then-Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's 2021 effort to encourage COVID-19 vaccinations has resurfaced amid renewed scrutiny of the federal pandemic response and Fauci's congressional testimony.
The footage from the Anacostia neighborhood shows Fauci, who was then the White House's top health advisor, and Bowser engaging with residents who expressed doubts about the rapid development, long-term safety, and government messaging surrounding the vaccines.
One resident in the video, filmed by PBS, directly challenged Fauci, stating, "The people in America are not settled with the information that's been given to us right now. So I'm not gonna be lining up taking a shot on a vaccination, for something that wasn't clear in the first place and then you all create a shot in miraculous time. It takes years to create."
Bowser, standing beside Fauci, urged residents to get vaccinated, warning that "If thousands of people, like you, don't get vaccinated, you're going to let this virus continue to percolate in this country and in this world."
The resident continued to question the accelerated timeline for vaccine development, drawing comparisons to the flu vaccine and expressing suspicion about government incentives for vaccination. "Because when you start talking about paying people to get vaccinated, when you start talking about incentivizing things to get people vaccinated, there's something else going on with that. Something else. It's something else," the resident stated.
The video has circulated online, drawing commentary from various figures. Critics have pointed to the exchange as evidence of public distrust and have linked it to broader debates about the pandemic's origins and the government's handling of the crisis.
Fauci recently testified before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee's Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. During the hearing, he invoked the Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination at least 111 times in response to questions from lawmakers, according to Senator Rand Paul, who leads the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Paul announced plans to hold a vote to certify contempt of Congress charges against Fauci.
Former President Donald Trump, who previously clashed with Fauci over pandemic strategy, criticized the doctor on social media. Trump stated he "inherited" Fauci but relied on him less over time, asserting that Fauci "made too many bad calls" and that President Biden elevated Fauci's influence. Fauci served as chief medical adviser under both the Trump and Biden administrations.
