Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has delayed the implementation of a new work-from-home policy that was set to grant employees the right to work remotely for two days per week. The legislation will now come into effect on July 1, 2027, a shift from the previously scheduled September 1 start date.
Debate on the bill was anticipated in the upper house this Thursday, but Carroll intends to pass the legislation prior to the November state election. Carroll stated that despite the delay, his office remains open to dialogue with the business community. He affirmed his support for both remote and flexible work arrangements, highlighting their benefits for working families.
"I want to be very clear, I support work from home," Carroll said. "I support flexible work. It is good for working families. Equally, though … everyone knows it's a partnership between working families and the business community and the government. That is why I've delayed these changes, and it's why I'm going to continue to work with the business community and make sure this policy is right."
The new laws would have provided full-time, regular casual, and part-time employees with the legal right to work from home for two days each week.
