Victoria's Secret Models Defy Age on Catwalk, Experts Weigh In on Youthful Appearances
Longtime Angels, some in their 40s, return to the runway, prompting discussion about cosmetic procedures, makeup, and natural aging.
A cadre of familiar faces, many in their 30s and 40s, returned to the Victoria's Secret runway recently, challenging the notion that modeling for the lingerie brand is exclusively a young woman's pursuit. Supermodels who debuted as far back as 1999 walked alongside newer talent, showcasing appearances that experts suggest are the result of a combination of factors, including advanced makeup techniques, cosmetic procedures, and dedicated skincare routines.
Among the returning models were Adriana Lima, 45, who first appeared in 1999; Caroline Trentini, 39, who debuted in 2005; Joan Smalls, 38, a recurring runway walker; and Irina Shayk, 40, who first joined the show in 2016. Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid, both in their fourth decade, also graced the catwalk.
Experts offered varying perspectives on how these models maintain their youthful complexions. Smita Ahluwalia, a clinical facialist, noted that some models exhibit sharper jawlines, lifted eyebrows, fuller cheeks, and exceptionally smooth skin, suggesting the use of Botox, fillers, and skin-boosting treatments. "Some of these models have definitely had some work done," Ahluwalia stated, pointing to potential procedures like Botox for forehead lines and brow lifting, fillers for volume in cheeks and lips, and even eye surgery.
Laura Kay, a beauty expert, emphasized the significant role of makeup, including strategic contouring and permanent lip makeup, in enhancing features and creating an ageless appearance. Joanne Evans, a skin expert, cautioned against definitively attributing smooth skin or fuller cheeks to injectables, highlighting that lighting, makeup, weight fluctuations, and facial expressions can dramatically alter appearance.
Dr. Ross Perry, medical director of Cosmedics, observed that some models look "remarkably different" compared to their initial appearances. He speculated on various procedures for models like Caroline Trentini, suggesting lip fillers and Botox for her smoother skin, and even a nose job and blepharoplasty for Elsa Hosk, alongside lip fillers. For Barbara Palvin, Dr. Perry noted a more chiselled appearance, suggesting possible rhinoplasty, lip fillers, and an eyebrow lift.
However, other specialists highlighted genetics and lifestyle. Professor Ali Al-Hussaini suggested subtle Botox and collagen-stimulating treatments for Joan Smalls, while agreeing that good genes and a healthy lifestyle play a significant role. Dr. Farah Latif noted Irina Shayk's consistently prominent cheekbones and speculated on subtle Botox and skin treatments, emphasizing the interplay of genetics, fitness, and potentially minor interventions.
Irina Shayk herself has publicly advocated for natural beauty, stating, "I always promote natural beauty because I think we live in this perfect world where everyone wants to be perfect. But I’m not perfect. Sometimes I have a double chin. Perfection doesn’t exist." She attributes her looks to genes, facial workouts, and avoiding alcohol and smoking, and has previously expressed skepticism about plastic surgery.
Adriana Lima's enduring bone structure was cited by plastic surgeon Fadi Hamadani as a key factor in her youthful appearance, alongside possible subtle fillers and Botox. Lima, responding to speculation about her appearance after childbirth, posted a makeup-free selfie captioned, "The face of a tired mum... thanks for your concern."
Alessandra Ambrosio, who debuted in 2000, retains her iconic features, with aesthetic nurse Anastasia suggesting subtle Botox and collagen-stimulating treatments, while also noting Ambrosio's dedication to Pilates, yoga, and diet. Ambrosio has previously spoken about a negative experience with cosmetic surgery at age 11.
Gigi Hadid has attributed changes in her appearance to advanced makeup techniques rather than cosmetic procedures, stating in a 2021 Vogue interview that she has "never done anything to my face." She explained that learning contouring and bronzing techniques has transformed her look.
Grace Elizabeth, 29, was noted by aesthetic nurse Anastasia Coles for her naturally youthful appearance and healthy skin, with treatments likely focused on maintaining skin quality through microneedling, skin boosters, and gentle chemical peels, rather than corrective anti-aging measures.
