Victoria's Secret Criticized Over Ill-Fitting Bra on Kylie Jenner
Experts weigh in on common lingerie mistakes as the brand faces backlash.
Victoria's Secret is facing criticism after sending a diamond-encrusted bra valued at £37 million, worn by Kylie Jenner, down the runway in a way that social media users deemed ill-fitting. The incident has coincided with experts highlighting common mistakes women make when purchasing and wearing lingerie.
Jené Luciani Sena, author of The Bra Book and affiliated with US-based intimates brand Shapermint, along with Milly Major, senior design manager at UK-based Curvy Kate, outlined eight frequent errors. These range from assuming bra sizes are universal across brands to improper fastening and care techniques.
One of the most significant pitfalls identified is the assumption that a bra size remains consistent across different brands and even different styles within the same brand. Sena advises using a size as a starting point but remaining open to trying various options, as fit can vary significantly. She also suggests that wireless bras can be a more accommodating choice for those unsure of their exact size.
Another common error is purchasing a bra that fits comfortably only on the tightest hook. Bras naturally stretch over time with wear and washing. Experts recommend that a new bra should feel secure and comfortable on the loosest hook, allowing for adjustments as the band loosens.
Incorrectly adjusting straps when a bra loses support is also highlighted. While it's natural to tighten straps, Sena points out that the band provides approximately 90% of a bra's support. Tightening straps excessively can lead to discomfort and won't compensate for a stretched-out band. Instead, checking the band for looseness and replacing the bra when necessary is advised. Additionally, straps should be tightened regularly, especially after washing, to ensure proper fit and prevent gaping cups.
Choosing a bra without considering breast shape and positioning is another mistake. Factors such as how far apart breasts sit, their fullness, and projection can influence which bra style is most suitable. Sena recommends experimenting with different cup shapes and center-gore designs to find a comfortable and supportive fit.
For sports bras, the advice is to select them based on the intended activity rather than solely on perceived tightness. The goal is a secure, comfortable fit that offers appropriate support without restricting movement or breathing. Bra labels often indicate the intended activity level.
The care of bras is also a critical factor. Putting bras in a dryer is strongly discouraged, as the heat can degrade materials and elasticity, shortening the bra's lifespan. Hanging bras to dry is recommended for longevity.
Furthermore, the perception that wireless bras offer less support is challenged. Advances in design and technology mean that many wireless bras now provide comparable support to underwire versions, utilizing features like wider bands and structured cups.
Finally, the method of putting on a bra is addressed. Instead of fastening in the front and rotating, the recommended 'swoop and scoop' method involves bending forward to allow breast tissue to fall into the cups, ensuring proper positioning and support.
