Victoria Police Collision with E-Bike Rider Under Investigation
Dashcam footage shows a police car colliding with a teenage e-bike rider in a kindergarten car park, prompting an internal investigation.
A marked police vehicle collided with a teenage e-bike rider in a kindergarten car park in Lara, Victoria, on Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 5:15 p.m. near Waverley Road, was captured on video and shared on Facebook, showing the e-bike rider being thrown from the vehicle after the impact.
Witnesses told the Geelong Advertiser that prior to the collision, officers had appeared to give a group of youths, including the rider, a thumbs-up after they waved at police. However, Victoria Police stated that officers observed a group of three youths on e-bikes riding erratically, posing a danger to themselves and the public. The group reportedly failed to stop and rode into the kindergarten car park, where the collision took place.
The teenager sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital. The e-bike became wedged against the front of the police vehicle. Online reactions to the footage were divided, with some expressing anger and others supporting the police action.
The Professional Standards Command of Victoria Police has launched an investigation into the incident, reviewing the footage and circumstances. Police are also seeking to identify the other two teenagers who were with the rider at the time.
