San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama found himself in an awkward, yet lighthearted, situation at Fanatics Fest when a young fan requested he sign a Jalen Brunson jersey. The incident occurred over the weekend at the Javits Center in New York City.
As Wembanyama walked through the event, a fan called out, "Wemby! Wemby! Sign my jersey! Sign my jersey please! Will you sign my jersey?" However, the jersey the fan presented bore the name and number of Jalen Brunson, a key player for the New York Knicks.
Wembanyama, appearing to smile and laugh, responded, "That's not… That’s Jalen Brunson…" The young fan then apologized. The exchange was captured on video.
The moment occurred against the backdrop of the recent NBA Finals, where the Spurs faced the Knicks. The Knicks ultimately defeated the Spurs in five games to win the championship. The New York crowd at Fanatics Fest, seemingly remembering Wembanyama's role in the series, playfully booed him.
Wembanyama was a focal point during the Finals, involved in numerous plays that drew attention and calls, some controversial, from fans and analysts alike.
Brunson, along with several Knicks teammates including Josh Hart, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and Miles McBride, were also in attendance at Fanatics Fest. The event featured numerous NBA stars, including Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Anthony Edwards.
This was Wembanyama's second appearance at the annual Fanatics Fest. He also participated in the 3-point challenge, achieving a perfect score, and appeared on a podcast discussing his admiration for international soccer stars Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.
