Victor Mesa Jr. Apologizes for Costly Baserunning Error in World Series Game 1
Rays outfielder takes responsibility for being thrown out attempting to steal third base, a decision he called 'not the smartest move'.
Victor Mesa Jr. apologized for a critical baserunning mistake during the fifth inning of the Tampa Bay Rays' 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday.
Mesa, who had successfully stolen nine bases during the regular season and two in the postseason prior to Game 1, was caught attempting to steal third base with one out. The play occurred on an 0-2 pitch with Yandy Díaz at the plate.
"Easy to say now, but it was not the best move," Mesa said after the game, according to ESPN. "I understand that was not the smartest move. Learn from that, and I apologize or whatever to my teammates because, obviously, I’m trying to make something positive, and it wasn’t done in that way."
The Rays trailed 2-1 at the time of the attempted steal. The offensive opportunity was erased by the pickoff, and it marked the first time a Rays baserunner had been thrown out attempting to steal in the postseason. The pitch from Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski was a 103-mph fastball.
Manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the aggressive nature of the play. "Ultimately, Victor is really competing, trying to do something to make something happen, put a little pressure on the defense," Cash told reporters. "And it didn’t work in our favor."
Before Mesa's miscue, the Rays had been 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts during the postseason. Following the Game 1 loss, their record stands at 13-for-15, with Jonathan Aranda also being thrown out attempting to steal in the sixth inning. However, Jorge Mateo later executed a double steal in the ninth inning.
Despite the setbacks, Chandler Simpson indicated that the Rays would not abandon their aggressive baserunning strategy. "We can't shy away from that" at this stage of the season, he stated, according to ESPN.
The Rays, who tied for second in MLB with 164 stolen bases during the regular season, will aim to even the series in Game 2 on Saturday before returning home.
