Victor Eklund poised to make New York Islanders roster
Nineteen-year-old prospect has impressed at every turn during training camp, seemingly earning a spot on the team.
Victor Eklund has given the New York Islanders every reason to keep him on the roster, checking every box and standing out at every opportunity during training camp. While nothing is official, the 19-year-old prospect's presence in the lineup for Saturday's preseason finale suggests he will make the team.
"My expectation is that I work as hard as I can," Eklund said after his first practice of rookie camp. "Give myself a shot at the team this year. Whatever happens, I want to make sure I’m giving 100 percent."
Teammates have taken notice. Bo Horvat commented on Eklund's performance, stating, "He’s been great. He’s getting better and better as the camp’s gone on. I think he’s gonna start getting more comfortable as the games go on too."
The Islanders have seen a strong showing from their prospects during camp. Cal Ritchie is expected to step into a second-line center role, potentially filling in for the injured Mathew Barzal. Kashawn Aitcheson and Cole Eiserman also impressed, appearing ready for potential call-ups from the AHL.
Eklund, in particular, has shown command of the puck and readiness for the physical demands of NHL training camp. A spot on the third line with Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Emil Heineman appears likely for Eklund, with potential for a top-six role if he continues to perform.
The Islanders are looking to their young talent, including Eklund, Ritchie, Aitcheson, Eiserman, and rising star Matthew Schaefer, to be a core part of the team's future. Despite potential roster challenges, Eklund's performance suggests he is ready to contribute.
"Obviously he’s not the biggest guy but he makes up for it in his compete," Horvat added. "His ability to do whatever it takes to stay not only in the lineup but wherever it takes to win. He’s gonna be a really good player for a long time here. We’re excited to have him."
