Veteran David Quessenberry to Protect Stafford's Blind Side for Rams

David Quessenberry, a veteran offensive tackle, is set to make his first start since 2023 for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. He will be tasked with protecting quarterback Matthew Stafford's blind side, a crucial role necessitated by the one-game suspension of starting left tackle Alaric Jackson.

Jackson received the suspension for an on-field incident during the Rams' recent overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. This situation elevates Quessenberry, a player who has spent over a decade in the NFL, to a prominent position in a critical NFC West matchup.

Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed confidence in Quessenberry, noting that the veteran has been consistently taking practice repetitions with the first-team offense, even alongside Stafford. "He's a consummate pro," McVay said. "Even though it's been a little bit of time, he still has played a lot of good, meaningful snaps."

Quessenberry's extensive experience includes stints with multiple teams such as the Texans, Titans, Bills, and Vikings. His career has also been marked by overcoming a battle with cancer early on, establishing him as a resilient and versatile lineman. This familiarity with the Rams' system and Stafford specifically is a key factor in the team's preparedness.

"A lot of trust in DQ," Stafford stated, referring to Quessenberry's experience and proven ability in the league. "He takes a bunch of snaps with our first offense all the time. I do feel confident in him. He has a great look in his eye, and he’s a Ram through and through."

For Quessenberry, stepping into a starting role offers a different kind of preparation than his usual role as a reserve. "It's kind of nice knowing, ‘Hey, on Sunday, we’re going to start the game and we’re rolling,'" Quessenberry said. "When you’re a swing guy preparing for both sides, there’s a lot of situations where you don’t know how it’s going to play out."

The Rams, currently 2-3, are looking to improve their standing in the division and cannot afford further mistakes. The offensive line's discipline, particularly concerning pre-snap penalties, has been an area of concern. Quessenberry acknowledges the stakes involved in protecting Stafford.

"Protecting Nine [No. 9 Matthew Stafford] is at the top of everybody’s list, no matter what," Quessenberry stated. "No matter what the game, no matter who we’re playing, that’s always the No. 1 thing."

Quessenberry expressed his readiness for the opportunity: "This is kind of what I’m here for. Things like this happen, so I’m ready to go. This is what I’ve worked for."
