Veteran Broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan Remembered at London Memorial Service
Colleagues from Sky News and other broadcasting outlets gathered to honor the late presenter.
Dermot Murnaghan, a veteran broadcaster who passed away at age 68, was remembered at a memorial service held at St Bride's Church in the City of London.
Murnaghan died on July 11 following a period of illness with prostate cancer. He had publicly shared his stage four diagnosis in 2025. The former host of the quiz show Eggheads had a distinguished career spanning decades, including a 15-year tenure as a lead anchor on Sky News and presenting roles at the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4.
Among those in attendance were prominent broadcasting figures, including Susanna Reid of Good Morning Britain, and Sky News journalists Beth Rigby and Mark Austin. Other notable attendees included Sky News presenters Matt Barbet and Anna Jones, Sky Sports presenter Jacquie Beltrao, and Times Radio presenter Adam Boulton, a former Sky News broadcaster. Sian Williams, a former presenter of 5 News at 5, also paid her respects.
Following Murnaghan's death, Reid shared a tribute on Instagram, calling the news "utterly devastating" and remembering him as a "legendary news journalist and presenter." She reflected on the "sheer pleasure of presenting with Dermot at BBC Breakfast," describing him as "a serious journalist who never took himself too seriously. He was intelligent and charming and viewers and guests loved him."
Murnaghan became a vocal advocate for prostate cancer awareness after his diagnosis, urging men in high-risk groups to get checked. Prostate Cancer UK described him as a "passionate and dedicated supporter" whose work significantly impacted those affected by the disease.
Murnaghan began his broadcasting career in 1989, presenting for Channel 4 before moving to ITV, where he hosted the Lunchtime News and News at Ten and led coverage of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. He was a main presenter for BBC Breakfast from 2002 to 2007 and later hosted a current affairs program for Sky News, where he covered events including the death of Queen Elizabeth II. He departed Sky News in 2023.
