Social media platforms have seen a resurgence of tales claiming the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, a vital link between Brooklyn and Staten Island, is haunted. Online discussions and videos describe drivers experiencing eerie phenomena after dark, including ghostly groaning, unexplained whispers, and a sense of an unsettling presence.
One TikTok post, which has gained traction, features a user expressing fear of crossing the bridge, noting its reputation for "howling in the wind." The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which opened in November 1964, was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion. It remains the sole direct vehicular connection between Staten Island and the rest of New York City, stretching approximately 2.6 miles across The Narrows. The bridge's twin towers stand about 693 feet above New York Harbor, with a navigational clearance of 228 feet for passing cargo ships.
Paranormal enthusiasts and urban legend aficionados point to the bridge's history as a source for these eerie claims. Reports indicate that three construction workers died during the bridge's five-year construction period. One worker reportedly fell from the structure shortly before its opening. Some believe these spirits, along with those of other workers who may have fallen into poured cement, now haunt the bridge. Theories suggest these restless spirits might be responsible for objects mysteriously falling and damaging vehicles.
Over the decades, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge has also been the site of numerous fatal accidents, emergency responses, and suicides. While an official count is not maintained, media estimates suggest between 100 and 150 individuals have jumped from the bridge, with 80 to 120 fatalities. In a single two-year period, 2013-2014, 14 people reportedly jumped, resulting in seven deaths. NYPD officers undergo specialized training to manage the frequent incidents of people jumping from the bridge.
In response to these tragic events, a stainless steel mesh fencing, spanning 28,000 feet along the entire upper and lower roadways, was completed in January 2023. Despite the presence of suicide-prevention phones on the bridge that connect to a crisis hotline, instances of people jumping have continued. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority does not maintain specific data on suicide attempts, but reports indicate that multiple attempts within a single month are not uncommon.
The bridge's imposing structure, especially when shrouded in the dense fog common to New York Harbor, contributes to its spooky atmosphere. Social media users frequently share photos of the bridge disappearing into the fog, further fueling discussions about strange sightings, moving figures, and unsettling experiences reported by those crossing the span, particularly at night.
Whether attributed to restless spirits, atmospheric conditions like fog and wind, peculiar lights, or the power of suggestion, the legend of the haunted Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge persists.
