Veronica Beard Apologizes and Pulls Jewelry After Design Copying Accusation
The fashion label, favored by Meghan Markle and the Princess of Wales, removed items after an independent designer accused them of replicating her work.
Fashion label Veronica Beard has issued an apology and removed jewelry from its website following accusations of design appropriation from independent designer Sara Beltrán.
Beltrán, the founder of the jewelry brand Dezso, publicly accused Veronica Beard of copying designs she had spent two decades developing. Beltrán, known for her ocean-inspired shell pendants and bracelets that retail between £700 and £4,000, shared examples of her work introduced in 2021 alongside pieces later offered by Veronica Beard.
She stated on social media, "Shame on you Veronica Beard, twenty years of my work and now this." Beltrán, born in El Paso, Texas, also suggested that Veronica Beard's alleged copying might be linked to her refusal of a collaboration offer from the brand in 2024. She described the brand as having "no ethics" and accused them of appropriating her creations.
Veronica Beard, a brand favored by high-profile figures including Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, and the Princess of Wales, acknowledged the similarities in a statement. "We are aware that certain pieces from our recent jewelry collection closely resemble Dezso designs," the brand said, according to Women's Wear Daily. "We deeply respect Sara Beltrán, her craft and her business. We have removed the relevant pieces from our stores and website. We are reviewing our design process to prevent mistakes in the future. We sincerely apologize to Sara. Veronica & Veronica."
The items in question have since been removed from the brand's website.
Founded in 2010 by sisters-in-law Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard, the label has become known for its polished American smart-casual style. The Duchess of Sussex has worn the brand both during her time on the television drama "Suits" and since joining the Royal Family.
Dezso's jewelry is positioned at the luxury market, with similar necklaces to those in question retailing for over £3,000. Veronica Beard's comparable pieces were priced in the hundreds, making them more accessible to shoppers. For independent designers, the introduction of similar designs by larger brands can significantly impact their business by undercutting original creators without offering recognition or compensation.
