Former San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has advised wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to cease public commentary as the two sides remain in a contract dispute.

"I think Brandon Aiyuk needs to stay out of the media, be quiet, and do what he has to do," Davis told Casino.ca. "He’s only hurting himself. Buddy, you are not bigger than the NFL."

Davis's remarks come as San Francisco's roster decisions indicate Aiyuk is not a primary focus for the team's immediate future. General manager John Lynch stated that "nothing has changed" regarding Aiyuk, who remains on the reserve/left squad list. This designation allowed the 49ers to finalize their 53-man roster without including Aiyuk.

The team's current wide receiver group now centers around Mike Evans, De’Zhaun Stribling, and Deebo Samuel. The situation has become increasingly unusual, particularly after the 49ers reportedly voided approximately $27 million in Aiyuk’s guaranteed money. This action followed a determination that Aiyuk did not fulfill contractual obligations while rehabbing ACL and MCL injuries that have sidelined him since 2024.

Aiyuk has stated he will not engage in "any kind of business" with San Francisco, despite needing to apply for reinstatement to return. This stance places him in a difficult position, as he desires another opportunity but is reluctant to take the necessary step to facilitate it.

Davis expressed concern that Aiyuk's current approach is detrimental. "Sit in the back seat, put a zip on his mouth, and be quiet," Davis advised. "Play the game of football, man. Everybody knows you can play."

While Davis stopped short of labeling Aiyuk a problematic teammate or a "cancer," he believes Aiyuk's talent could still benefit another organization. "He’s becoming the noise," Davis concluded.

Aiyuk's talent had previously earned him a four-year, $120 million extension. However, after months of public discord, the 49ers have proceeded with building their roster, leaving Aiyuk's career in limbo.
