An illegal immigrant from Venezuela, who was fatally shot by an off-duty FBI agent in Chicago on Monday night, had previously been apprehended and released into the United States under the Biden administration, according to federal law enforcement sources.

The deceased, identified as 27-year-old Oscar D. Corrales, was reportedly firing a gun toward individuals in a homeless encampment when the agent, who was driving alone, intervened. Sources stated the agent observed Corrales shooting at the encampment, exited his vehicle, and subsequently shot and killed Corrales.

Corrales had been apprehended at the southern border in October 2023 and was released into the U.S., federal sources told Fox News. He also had a prior arrest in California, from which he was released despite an ICE detainer, though details surrounding that arrest were not immediately available.

Sources emphasized that the incident was not related to an immigration enforcement operation and occurred while the FBI agent was off duty.

The Chicago Police Department confirmed officers responded to a shooting involving federal agents in the 1700 block of South Union Avenue. The department stated its Investigative Response Team was on site to document the incident and referred further inquiries to the FBI's Chicago field office.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Corrales under case number 5735. The FBI’s Chicago field office was contacted for additional information regarding the shooting and the agent's involvement.
