Varlamov Returns to Ice After 662-Day Injury Layoff
New York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov makes a promising return in a preseason game after a lengthy recovery from knee injuries.
Semyon Varlamov made a significant step in his recovery, returning to an NHL crease Tuesday night for the New York Islanders in a preseason game against the Rangers. The veteran goaltender entered the game with 10:15 remaining in the second period, marking his first appearance in 662 days, with his last NHL game on November 29, 2024.
During his time on the ice, Varlamov made seven saves, including a notable stop on a breakaway attempt by Alexis Lafrenière. He also turned aside a difficult shot from Sean Durzi late in the second period. Varlamov's return comes just over a week before the Islanders' season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Varlamov, 38, underwent two partial knee replacements during his extensive recovery. He described the decision for surgery as a "crazy" and "very risky idea," but one he pursued because he did not want to end his career. The goalie's last season was cut short due to the injury, with his performance before that marked by a 3-4-3 record and an .889 save percentage.
Last season, David Rittich served as the primary backup to Ilya Sorokin while Varlamov was sidelined. However, Varlamov gained valuable ice time at the end of the season, appearing in two games with AHL Bridgeport. He recorded two wins, allowed three goals, and made 46 saves, demonstrating a realistic path to his return.
The Islanders also signed Vitek Vanecek to a one-year, $1 million contract in free agency, adding depth to their goaltending situation. The team may opt to carry three goaltenders, a decision that coach Lane Lambert acknowledged could present roster challenges.
Varlamov's return to game action, even in a preseason capacity, signals progress in his long journey back to the Islanders' roster. A full appearance in a game later in the week is expected to be his next milestone.
