A newly constructed playground in Halewood has been subjected to vandalism just days before its scheduled opening, forcing a delay for local families. The damage, which includes paint daubed on equipment and a ripped section of the playground floor, will cost thousands of pounds to repair.

The council stated that the facilities were intended to be ready in time for children to enjoy during the summer holidays. The extent of the damage requires assessment for safety implications and further repairs, pushing back the opening date.

"There is absolutely no reasoning behind this kind of mindless behaviour, but the impact is significant," said a representative. "The cost to repair the equipment, remove the paint and assess any safety implications or wider damage will run into thousands of pounds."

The playground features separate junior and toddler play areas connected by a sensory path. New equipment suitable for ages 0-14, including swings, slides, climbing frames, accessible and inclusive equipment, and sensory panels, had been installed in recent weeks.

The incident has been reported to Merseyside Police, and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify those responsible and understand the impact of their actions. The playground was scheduled to open to the public later this week.
