Vance, Trump Embrace Halloween Spirit with Themed Costumes

Vice President JD Vance celebrated Halloween by transforming his home into Hogwarts, donning a Dumbledore costume. His infant son, Alec, was dressed as Dobby the House Elf, while their eldest son, Ewan, appeared as Harry Potter.

Vance shared a video on social media wishing followers a happy holiday from "Vice President Dumbledore" and "little Dobby the Elf." He and his wife, Usha, have four children, including Alec, who was born in July. Alec's birth marked the first time in 156 years that a sitting vice president welcomed a child while in office.

President Donald Trump also participated in Halloween festivities, attending a party at his Mar-a-Lago residence. Trump humorously stated that his costume was simply himself, joking that he had "ten minutes" to get ready.

Last year, Vance garnered attention for dressing as a popular online caricature of himself, known as "Fat JD," a meme that emerged following his election as vice president. The meme's origin has been traced to an incident involving Vance, Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Vance has acknowledged seeing the memes and finding them humorous, as evidenced by his recent costume choices.

Despite political differences, Vance's willingness to engage in lighthearted self-parody through his Halloween costume has been noted. The Vance family welcomed Alec earlier this year, with Trump congratulating the family on social media. The birth of Alec was a significant event, with the last incumbent Second Family to have a newborn while in office being Schuyler Colfax's family in 1870. Vance recounted in his memoir that a personal tragedy influenced his and his wife's decision to have a fourth child, despite prior considerations about the pressures of public life.
