Van Driver Jailed for Deliberately Running Over Cyclist

A van driver has been jailed for three-and-a-half years after deliberately running over a cyclist while transporting blood to a hospital. The incident occurred in Lewisham, London.

Mark Okotie, 44, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent at Woolwich Crown Court. He was sentenced to three years and six months. Okotie's van swerved out of its lane and into the path of the cyclist before accelerating. The cyclist was knocked off his bike and run over.

The victim sustained multiple fractures to his pelvis and a fractured femur, requiring surgery. In a victim statement, the cyclist described how the attack has made them more cautious of people and has impacted their ability to participate in activities like jogging and certain exercises. They also expressed experiencing panic when hearing large vehicles approach from behind.

The incident took place in March 2024. Police and the London Ambulance Service responded to the scene. Detectives secured internal and external dashcam footage from Okotie's van, as well as footage from nearby buses, to build evidence.

Detective Inspector Steven Andrews, who led the investigation, stated that Okotie was transporting blood for hospital patients and chose to endanger another person's life instead of continuing his journey. Andrews commended the investigative work in securing footage and witness evidence, which established Okotie's culpability. He expressed hope that the sentence provides justice for the victim and discourages similar acts of violence on London roads.
