Tawnia McGeehan, 38, fatally shot her daughter, Addi Smith, 11, in their room at the Rio Hotel & Casino in February while on a cheerleading trip, authorities said. A coroner's report revealed that Addi died from a gunshot wound to the head and had a significant amount of drugs in her system.

Investigators found the girl inside the hotel room, dressed in pajamas, covered by a blanket with a pillow over her face. Hotel security had to force entry into the room after responding to a welfare check, where they discovered the scene and subsequently contacted police. Inside the room, security personnel found a note taped to the front door of the room, which prompted them to call law enforcement.

McGeehan's toxicology report indicated a cocktail of drugs in her system, including fentanyl, promethazine, and diphenhydramine.
