A wealthy Utah mother accused of murdering her husband after an argument about an affair may have inadvertently provided investigators with clues to the location of his body through her wearable technology. Jennifer Gledhill, 43, is charged with the September 21, 2024, shooting death of her husband, Matthew Johnson, 51, at their $1 million home in Cottonwood Heights, near Salt Lake City. Johnson, the father of Gledhill's three children, had accused her of an affair, leading to an argument that culminated in a night of drinking and his death.
Investigators believe Gledhill may have been wearing an Oura Ring at the time of the alleged crime. A search warrant unsealed in February sought data from Oura Ring accounts linked to both Gledhill and Johnson between September 20 and October 1, 2024. The warrant states that if Gledhill wore the ring during the disposal of Johnson's body, it could contain location information not available from her phone, which she had reportedly turned off. Oura Rings track activity, heart rate, body temperature, and can record GPS locations with time stamps. Photos from earlier on the day of the alleged murder show Gledhill wearing her fitness ring, and Johnson's military unit confirmed he also possessed one.
Prosecutors previously used GPS data from Gledhill's vehicle to demonstrate her travel to remote sites in northern Utah before and after Johnson's death. Gledhill was arrested after allegedly confessing to the killing to a lover, who then alerted the police. Her parents, Thomas and Rosalie Gledhill, have also been arrested for allegedly assisting their daughter by deep-cleaning the home after the murder.
Evidence presented in court includes images prosecutors claim show Gledhill brutally killed Johnson as he slept. Images of blood stains on the carpet beneath the bed in the couple's bedroom, confirmed by DNA analysis to be Johnson's, were shown. A GPS tracking map also reportedly showed Gledhill traveling north the day after the alleged murder to a location where Johnson's red truck was found. At that same location, police discovered a vehicle storage container floating in a creek that tested positive for Johnson's blood.
Further GPS data indicated Gledhill traveled to another site where police found the couple's mattress and pillows, wrapped in a rug from their home. A 2023 image was presented, purportedly showing Johnson near the same rug that Gledhill allegedly dumped with the mattress. Gledhill allegedly told her lover that she placed Johnson's body in a storage container and loaded it into her minivan. Gledhill is scheduled for a preliminary hearing, with her trial set to begin in December.
