Utah Father, Four Children Die in Early Morning House Fire
A father and four of his six children were killed in a devastating house fire in Riverdale, Utah, leaving his wife and two sons as the sole survivors.
A devastating house fire in Riverdale, Utah, claimed the lives of a father and four of his six children early Thursday morning. The blaze, which broke out just before 2 a.m., left the mother and two sons as the only survivors.
Nate Bird, 38, and four of his children—Addisyn, 15; Rayda, 11; Easton, 9; and 5-year-old Francie—succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire. One child was pronounced dead at the scene, while Bird and three of his children died later at a hospital. Another child remains in stable condition with critical injuries, according to Riverdale Police Chief Casey Warren.
Lindsey Bird, 37, and two of their eldest sons, 16-year-old Jayden and 15-year-old Teagan, survived the incident. According to a GoFundMe page established for the family, one of the surviving sons sustained significant burns while attempting to rescue his siblings.
Family members described Nate Bird as a hero, recounting that he first rescued his wife and one child before re-entering the engulfed home to save his other children who were trapped. "Losing family members is never easy, and knowing we have so many wonderful friends and loved ones standing beside us means more than we can put into words," a family member stated on the fundraising page.
The community has rallied around the grieving family. A vigil was held, bringing together residents to support the survivors. "We were all really close... I got told this morning and started crying," said Lily Anderson, a local resident who knew Lindsey Bird. "Now, having to walk to school and looking at the house is so sad."
David Messina, the family's bishop, remembered Nate Bird as "a great friend" and a "salt of the earth" individual. "He died a hero! He loved his family so fiercely and Lindsey is the most amazing woman and mom!" commented Annise Jordan Barela, a friend.
Lindsey Bird is a teacher with the Weber School District and previously served as a crossing guard. Her children were in fourth, sixth, and eleventh grades, with two in tenth grade. Their youngest daughter's sixth birthday was scheduled for just days after the fire. Nate and Lindsey had been high school sweethearts since their junior year.
The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed. The Riverdale Police Department has been contacted for comment.
