FC Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks, a highly-touted 19-year-old prospect, has accepted a call-up to Germany's under-21 national team for European qualifiers, a move that is expected to finalize his international future with Germany and preclude him from playing for the United States men's national soccer team (USMNT).
Germany's U21 coach, Antonio Di Salvo, indicated that Banks had made his decision. "We’ve been in contact with both of them for a while now and had focused our efforts," Di Salvo stated. "I’m very pleased that we have been able to lay out a future pathway with Germany for them and that they agreed with it."
Banks previously declined a USMNT call-up in March to consider his international options. He has represented the U.S. at the under-20 level, and was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, before moving to Germany at a young age. Over the past year, he has become a regular starter for FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga, a development that positioned him as a potential future cornerstone for the USMNT.
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino had indicated that Banks was still undecided as of mid-September, which led to his exclusion from the upcoming September/October camp. The USMNT roster for this camp notably features a large contingent of young players, including 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan and 13 uncapped players, 12 of whom are 21 or younger, as the team focuses on its next generation.
Had Banks not opted out of the March camp, he would have been a strong candidate for the USMNT's World Cup roster, particularly given the team's depth concerns at center back. His decision to accept Germany's call-up, which requires a one-time switch with FIFA, signifies a significant loss for the USMNT's future defensive plans.
