Second Lady Usha Vance has expressed an "open mind and open heart" regarding her husband Vice President JD Vance's political future, as speculation mounts about his potential presidential candidacy in 2028.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance indicated that the family is prepared to support whatever decisions her husband makes regarding his public service. "Whatever it is that he feels is the right thing for him to do, we're going to have a good time doing it," she told interviewer Rachel Campos-Duffy. She added, "We will make the best of it in the best possible way."
The Second Lady stated that the family is taking things "one step at a time" and that Vice President Vance is currently focused on the upcoming midterm elections. "Right now, that step is he’s really focused on the midterms," Vance said. "And for me, it’s being focused on the things that I get to do during this four-year period..."
Vance noted that the family has adapted to changes since entering the national political spotlight. "I’ve seen us adapt to all sorts of things and all sorts of changes," she added.
Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have been identified as potential frontrunners for the Republican nomination in 2028, with various polls showing them leading in different surveys. Donald Trump has reportedly told donors that "we need to elect JD" as he considers Vance or Rubio for 2028.
Beyond discussions of future presidential aspirations, Usha Vance shared a piece of advice she offered her husband: to take a break from social media. "I think the best advice was to take a little bit of a social media break," she said.
She elaborated that the constant stream of online content can be "exhausting." Vance mentioned that her husband took a social media break for Lent, which she believes was a beneficial experience, allowing him to receive information in less constant, more aggregated ways. "I personally think it helped him have some perspective about various things that he was thinking about," she concluded.
