Second Lady Usha Vance has offered insights into the ongoing speculation surrounding her husband, Vice President JD Vance's, potential presidential aspirations in 2028. While signaling her support for any future decisions, she stressed that his immediate attention is directed toward the upcoming midterm elections.
"My way of thinking about it is we just take things one step at a time," Usha Vance stated in a recent interview with "Fox & Friends." "Right now, that step is he’s really focused on the midterms." She added that her own focus during this four-year period is on her initiatives, adopting an "open mind and open heart towards whatever might come next." She noted the family's adaptability to change.
Vice President Vance has similarly deflected questions about future presidential runs, asserting that his current priority is the midterm contests. This past month, the Vances welcomed their fourth child, Alex, a new addition that Usha Vance described as a "great newborn" who is sleeping well.
Usha Vance revealed that the Vice President has been reading "The Hobbit" to their children before bedtime and highlighted her ongoing national initiative to promote child literacy. She also shared a lighthearted remark from JD Vance about the challenges of balancing the vice presidency with a growing family. "The second lady said, ‘Well, you can have one of two things. You can be VP, or you can have a fourth child,’" JD Vance quipped at a recent event. "Ladies and gentlemen, I must be pretty persuasive, because I got both."
Historically, several presidents have had young children during their time in office. For instance, former President Donald Trump's youngest son, Barron, was 10 years old during his father's first term, and former President Barack Obama had a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old when he took office.
JD Vance is frequently polled as a leading contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio also often mentioned. Former President Trump has publicly contemplated who between Vance and Rubio might be a stronger candidate for the party.
Regarding her husband's potential presidential prospects, Usha Vance stated, "Whatever it is that he feels is the right thing for him to do, we’re going to have a good time doing it. We will make the best of it in the best possible way."
