USC Trojans Secure Upset Victory Over Penn State Nittany Lions in White Out Game

The No. 19 USC Trojans disrupted Penn State's highly anticipated White Out game, securing a 31-23 upset victory at Beaver Stadium on Saturday night. The win improves USC's record to 6-1 and marks a crucial Big Ten road victory for head coach Lincoln Riley's program.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava was instrumental in the Trojans' success, completing 21 of 33 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley, returning from injury, contributed nine receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. Running back King Miller added 102 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Despite an occasionally inconsistent defensive performance, USC managed to overcome the formidable atmosphere of Happy Valley. The Trojans opened the scoring with a touchdown pass from Maiava to Mosley, following a key fourth-down conversion. Penn State responded, but Maiava connected with Tanook Hines for another touchdown early in the second quarter, giving USC a brief lead.

Penn State, led by quarterback Rocco Becht, who threw for 289 yards and a touchdown, repeatedly exploited USC's defensive coverage. The teams went into halftime tied at 17-17 after a last-second field goal by Penn State's Ryan Barker.

Second Half Resurgence

The Trojans attempted an onside kick to start the second half, but Penn State recovered. The Nittany Lions capitalized, taking a 20-17 lead with a field goal. However, USC mounted a critical response. Miller broke free for a 13-yard touchdown run on an option pitch from Maiava, putting the Trojans ahead 24-20.

When Penn State drove deep into USC territory again, the Trojans' defense managed to hold, forcing another field goal that narrowed the score to 24-23 early in the fourth quarter. The decisive blow came when Maiava found Kayden Dixon-Wyatt for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 11:11 remaining, extending USC's lead to 31-23.

Defensive Stand Secures Victory

USC's defense faced a critical test late in the game as Penn State threatened to tie. A pivotal moment occurred when Christian Pierce forced a fumble from Brett Eskildsen after a 25-yard reception. Chasen Johnson recovered the fumble at USC's 35-yard line, effectively ending Penn State's comeback hopes.

While Penn State relied on three field goals, USC consistently found the end zone on its scoring drives, a key factor in the outcome. The Trojans' defense, though not flawless, proved sufficient when it mattered most.

Implications for USC

This victory follows USC's recent home loss to Oregon and provides consecutive wins against Washington and Penn State. The Trojans have now become bowl eligible and hold a 3-1 record in Big Ten play. The win is particularly significant as it demonstrates USC's ability to perform and win in challenging road environments.

USC will have a bye week before their next road game against Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium.
