USC faces familiar hostile environment despite Barry Alvarez's comments
Legendary former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez suggested USC players aren't accustomed to loud crowds, overlooking the Trojans' recent experience at Penn State.
USC is set to face a deafening crowd at Wisconsin's Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday, but the Trojans have already proven their ability to perform in hostile environments.
Barry Alvarez, a revered figure in Wisconsin football history, remarked on "The Barry Alvarez Show" that USC players are "not used to a full stadium with a loud house where they have to deal with the noise." However, this assertion overlooks USC's recent experience at Penn State's "White Out" game, where they triumphed 31-23 in front of 114,419 fans at Beaver Stadium.
"It feels like a movie," USC quarterback Jayden Maiava said of playing in such an atmosphere. Alvarez's comments, which also referred to USC as "Southern Cal"—a nickname the university dislikes—could serve as bulletin-board material for the Trojans.
USC (6-1 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) will face Wisconsin (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) at 4:30 p.m. PDT on NBC.
Preparing for Noise
Alvarez's suggestion that USC is unaccustomed to loud crowds is further countered by the Trojans' own practice environment. USC utilizes a sophisticated sound system in its new $225 million Bloom Performance Center, designed to replicate game-day noise levels. Coach Lincoln Riley described the system as more "life-like" than older setups, allowing for zoned sound to better simulate a stadium's cacophony.
Strength vs. Strength
The matchup features a key battle between USC's passing offense, which ranks seventh nationally with 310.1 yards per game, and Wisconsin's pass defense, which allows only 171.2 yards per game, good for 19th nationally. USC's run game, averaging 152.3 yards per game, will aim for a breakthrough performance.
Travel Adjustments
For their trip to Wisconsin, the Trojans departed on Friday, a day later than their recent cross-country trips to Rutgers and Penn State. Coach Riley noted that the shorter travel distance made a Friday departure feasible without disrupting the team's road routine.
USC has achieved a 2-0 record in Big Ten road games this season, aiming to surpass its best single-season Big Ten road record since joining the conference in 2024.
Bye Week Benefits
USC enters the game well-rested after its first bye week of the season. The break allowed players to focus on recovery through methods such as hot and cold tubs and nap pods. "Rested, slept, just continued to recover and get the mind and the body right before this upcoming week," Maiava stated.
Injury Update
The Trojans are hopeful that the bye week will aid in their recovery. Defensive tackle Jahkeem Stewart and linebacker Jadyn Walker are listed as probable. Tight end Mark Bowman, wide receiver Luc Weaver, and defensive tackle Jide Abasiri are questionable. Wisconsin running back Darrion Dupree is listed as probable.
