USC head coach Lincoln Riley is projecting an air of confidence as his 14th-ranked Trojans prepare to open their season against San Jose State. Addressing questions about pressure, Riley stated he is "excited and confident about what we’re doing," indicating that years of work are beginning to manifest.
Riley acknowledged the team's past struggles, noting that his first four USC teams all lost at least three games and failed to secure a significant bowl victory. This marks a departure from his successful tenure at Oklahoma, where his teams reached the College Football Playoff in three out of five seasons.
Roster and Staff Additions
To address these challenges, Riley has brought in new personnel and highlighted existing strengths. Gary Patterson, a veteran coach, has been appointed as defensive coordinator. Riley described Patterson as highly motivated and deeply engaged with the team's defensive strategies. "That fire’s still burning very, very hot," Riley said of Patterson.
The team also features veteran quarterback Jayden Maiava, entering his second season as the full-time starter. Riley emphasized the importance of quarterback experience, referencing the multiyear starters in last season's national championship game. The Trojans also boast a strong running back duo in Waymond Jordan and King Miller, supported by an offensive line Riley believes is the best since his arrival, even with the loss of center Kilian O’Connor to a season-ending injury.
Facilities and Recruiting
Riley also pointed to increased depth on both the offensive and defensive lines as a key factor. He cited the team's ability to absorb injuries, such as the foot injury to defensive tackle Jahkeem Stewart, due to the availability of veteran and younger players. The new $200 million Bloom Football Performance Center, with its advanced rehabilitation and recovery facilities, is also expected to benefit player health and readiness.
Furthermore, USC has recruited a top-tier freshman class, with several players, including tight end Mark Bowman and defensive end Luke Wafle, listed as starters on the initial depth chart.
Challenging Schedule Ahead
Despite the optimism, USC faces a demanding schedule that includes matchups against No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Oregon, and No. 6 Indiana. The consecutive games against Ohio State and Indiana present significant hurdles. Riley remains focused on the potential of the team and the program, stating, "I do have a lot of confidence in the football team that I think we have a chance to be."
