US Wholesale Prices Jump Sharply, Fueling Inflation Concerns

Wholesale prices in the United States surged in September at their fastest pace since March 2022, primarily driven by soaring fuel costs, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Producer prices rose 1.3% in September compared to August, more than double the increase recorded in the previous month. This marked the most significant monthly jump in wholesale prices in over a year. The wholesale price index for energy alone climbed more than 10% in September.

This acceleration in wholesale prices comes on the heels of a report released a day earlier showing that consumer prices also accelerated in September. The BLS data indicated that overall consumer prices rose 3.7% in September compared to a year earlier, an uptick from the 3.4% annual inflation rate recorded in August. Fuel costs were a major contributor to this increase, accounting for more than half of the overall consumer price rise in September.

The increasing cost of diesel fuel, a key component in the supply chain for many goods, has reached $6.31 a gallon, according to AAA. This represents an increase of approximately 66% since the start of the year.

Overall, wholesale prices increased by 6.3% for the year ending in September, the largest annual jump in the index since December 2022. Despite the broad inflationary pressures, consumer food prices remained stable in September, showing no change from August.

These inflation reports arrive as affordability remains a significant concern for voters in the lead-up to the midterm elections in early November.
