US to Grant Visa to Flávio Bolsonaro After Brazil Election Loss

The United States will issue a visa to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family, a senior State Department official confirmed, after the Brazilian politician fled his home country following his election defeat. The announcement was made Tuesday, the same day a deadline for Bolsonaro to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports expired.

Bolsonaro's brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, who resides in Texas, had publicly advised him to leave Brazil if he lost the election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Flávio Bolsonaro himself stated in a social media video that he had been ordered to hand over his passports and was prohibited from leaving the country, asserting he had no intention of fleeing.

Legal Challenges and Passport Order

The sealed Supreme Court order for Flávio Bolsonaro to surrender his passports was issued Sunday, the day of his election loss. The order stems from two federal investigations into the senator for alleged corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. One investigation accuses him of using a sports betting company to launder over $1 billion in deductions from government pensions. In a separate case, he is alleged to have accepted millions of dollars from a disgraced banker to fund a biopic of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. Prosecutors also suspect these funds were used to cover expenses for his brother, Eduardo, and to promote Flávio's political agenda with the Trump administration.

Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing and has accused Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is leading one of the investigations, of being a Lula ally. Mauricio Marcon, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro's Liberal Party, also questioned de Moraes' impartiality.

Electoral Defeat and Political Stance

Flávio Bolsonaro lost Sunday's presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. After initially refusing to accept the results and requesting their annulment, Bolsonaro ultimately acknowledged his defeat in a video Monday, claiming Lula had used unfair tactics. He urged the electoral court to investigate alleged fraud and nullify Lula's and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin's candidacies, a move that has historically not been undertaken.

Lula secured over 64 million votes, a margin of nearly 4 percent over Bolsonaro's fewer than 60 million votes. Bolsonaro, whose eight-year term as a senator expires in January 2027, stated he would continue to organize opposition among his congressional colleagues to the election results. His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, also fled Brazil for Florida after his 2022 election loss, though he returned three months later. Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for attempting a coup following his election defeat.
