U.S. forces conducted airstrikes targeting Iranian missile depots, drones, and air defense facilities in what officials described as swift punishment for the deaths of two American service members. The strikes, which concluded Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET, were aimed at Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces believed responsible for a fatal attack on U.S. assets in Jordan on Friday.
A video released by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) showed U.S. forces launching a missile that struck Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities. CENTCOM stated that these strikes are intended to degrade Iranian military capabilities and have occurred for eight consecutive nights.
Iranian state media reported that Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, and Bandar Abbas were among the locations hit. Explosions were also reported near Sirik. Concurrently, IRGC-affiliated news station Tasnim reported that Iran had struck U.S. assets in Kuwait in retaliation for the ongoing U.S. strikes.
The IRGC claimed to have targeted two U.S. bases, Camp Buehring and Ali Al Salem Air Base, with "large-scale attacks with kamikaze drones." The military action follows an Iranian strike on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on Friday, which resulted in the deaths of two U.S. service members, the disappearance of one service member, and injuries to four others who have since been medically evacuated.
President Donald Trump characterized the deaths as "very sad" and reiterated his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of 15 U.S. service members and wounded over 430 since February.
Earlier statements from Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, had warned that U.S. strikes would lead to "unforgettable lessons" and accused the U.S. of seeking to escalate the conflict. Khamenei referred to U.S. actions in the region as "criminal" and called the United States the "Great Satan."
Following the U.S. service members' deaths, Iranian state media reported the firing of IRGC missiles at an unspecified vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. had previously launched strikes early Saturday targeting "surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities."
According to IRNA, the strikes on Iran impacted an electricity plant in Hormozgan, cutting off water supply to approximately 10,000 residents on Qeshm Island, and disrupted a bridge near Bandar Abbas. The heightened conflict activity has intensified focus on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route.
Iran's deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that Iran is no longer implementing a deal signed about a month ago, accusing the U.S. of violating its commitments. Amid the U.S. strikes, Iran's energy ministry ordered citizens to reduce air conditioning use due to strain on the country's power grid, citing a need to ensure a stable electricity supply in southern provinces facing extreme heat and attacks on power facilities.
