The United States launched military strikes against Iran on Saturday, responding to an attack on a commercial vessel and the Islamic Republic's declaration to close the Strait of Hormuz. The retaliation began at 7:15 a.m. Eastern Time, under the direction of President Trump.
United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that Iran attacked the M/V GFS Galaxy, a container vessel flying the flag of Cyprus. The attack resulted in significant engine room damage to the ship and the disappearance of a civilian crew member.
CENTCOM stated that Iran had been given another opportunity to adhere to a Memorandum of Understanding following previous attacks on commercial vessels but failed to do so. The command vowed that Tehran would face a "heavy cost" for its actions. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth posted on X, "Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay."
