A US servicewoman stationed at RAF Mildenhall has avoided jail time after causing a fatal head-on collision that killed a couple. Jasmine Dessaure, 37, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving.

The incident occurred in March 2023 on a single-carriageway road near Brandon, Suffolk. Dessaure was driving well within the 60mph speed limit when she lost focus for what was described as "just under two seconds," leading to the accident. Her vehicle left the carriageway and collided with a Nissan carrying Dilipan Sebastiampillai, 43, and his wife Dorota, 41. The couple's car caught fire following the impact.

At Peterborough Crown Court, Dessaure was sentenced to 12 months in custody, suspended for two years. She was also given an 18-month driving ban and ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work. The prosecuting barrister noted that in such cases, "there are no winners, only losers," and that the collision resulted from a "momentary lack of concentration and attention."

During the sentencing, it was explained that Dessaure's vehicle experienced a "yawing" motion across the carriageway, possibly due to "overcorrection" after her tyre left the road and entered a trench. The collision resulted in "catastrophic injury and death" for the couple. The judge acknowledged the tragedy, stating that "nothing I can say will make anything any better for anyone."

Dessaure's legal representative conveyed her deep remorse for the incident. The family of the deceased declined to have victim personal statements read in court.

This case follows other incidents involving US personnel in the UK. In August 2022, a US servicewoman based at RAF Lakenheath was cleared of causing the death of a motorcyclist and later reached a six-figure compensation agreement. In 2019, Anne Sacoolas, a US government employee, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving after a collision outside an RAF base, receiving a suspended prison sentence.
