A U.S. service member was killed Saturday in northern Iraq during an operation involving explosive remnants from a downed Iranian drone, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Sunday. Another service member was wounded in the incident and is receiving medical treatment.

The fatal incident occurred as U.S. forces were handling explosive material after recovering a downed Iranian one-way attack drone. "A U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone," CENTCOM stated on X.

Meanwhile, in Jordan, unidentified remains were discovered Sunday during the search for a U.S. service member reported missing following a separate Iranian attack on Friday. CENTCOM confirmed the discovery, stating that an examination process to verify the remains is ongoing.

The Iranian attack on a U.S. base in Jordan on Friday resulted in the deaths of two U.S. service members. Four other American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals but have since been discharged.

CENTCOM has stated that additional information, including the identities of those involved, is being withheld out of respect for the families during the notification process.
