US Poverty Rate Hits Record Low, Median Income Reaches All-Time High Amid Consumer Pessimism

The U.S. economy has achieved a historic milestone with the poverty rate falling to an all-time low of 10.2% in 2025, and inflation-adjusted median household income reaching a record high, according to new data from the Census Bureau. However, these macroeconomic improvements have not translated into widespread consumer optimism, with approximately 85% of Americans surveyed by Fox News pollsters stating their personal financial situation either worsened or remained the same throughout 2025.

The poverty threshold is defined by the Census Bureau based on household size and income. For a family of four, this meant earning less than $32,649 annually to be considered in poverty. The median household income saw a 2.6% increase, reaching $87,460 in 2025. Despite this growth, inflation eroded these gains, with the dollar's value declining by about 3% between 2024 and 2025.

Analysts suggest several factors may contribute to this disconnect between economic data and public perception. While some economists and politicians highlight regional economic booms, particularly in Southern states which have seen substantial growth due to internal migration and business-friendly environments, others point to persistent issues impacting daily financial life. High gas prices, linked to geopolitical events in the Middle East, and increased costs attributed to tariffs have been cited as significant factors contributing to negative consumer sentiment.

This sentiment appears to be affecting political perceptions, with a significant portion of voters in a recent Fox News poll believing the current administration is negatively impacting the economy. This has raised concerns for Republicans, particularly in traditionally conservative states like Texas, Ohio, and Alaska, where shifts in voter sentiment could influence midterm election outcomes.

Some conservatives have embraced the Census Bureau's findings as a success. For instance, Rep. Michael Baumgartner, R-WA, posted on X, "Poverty is bad. Every American should celebrate poverty rates are now the lowest on record. Good job everyone. Keep it going." Rep. Don Bacon, R-Nebraska, also commented on X, "Good news we can all celebrate."

Conversely, some progressive commentators have expressed skepticism about the reported decline in poverty rates. Twitch streamer Hasan Piker argued on X that trillions spent on international conflicts have led to increased poverty at home, alongside a growing homelessness crisis and underemployment, despite the nation's wealth.

The number of uninsured individuals also remained near historic lows, according to the Census Bureau. Despite these positive indicators, the rising cost of housing, which has outpaced wage growth significantly over recent decades, continues to fuel economic pessimism for many Americans, who view homeownership as a crucial aspect of financial well-being.
