US Postal Service Announces Temporary Price Hikes for Holiday Shipping
Starting Oct. 4, the USPS will increase prices on select package services, citing increased demand and handling costs during the peak season.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will implement temporary price increases for some package services beginning October 4, 2026, and continuing through January 17, 2027. The change is intended to address the anticipated surge in mail and package volume during the 2026 holiday season and the associated rise in handling costs.
These adjustments will affect several domestic package services, including Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select. Other USPS products and services will remain unaffected by this temporary price adjustment.
The extent of the price increase will vary based on the type of item being shipped, its weight, and the distance it needs to travel. The USPS has detailed the changes for both retail and commercial customers.
For retail customers, increases for Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage packages will range from $0.50 to $3.90 for Zones 1-4, depending on weight. For longer distances (Zones 5-9), the increases for these services will range from $0.75 to $9.10. Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes will see an increase of $2.10 for large boxes and $1.00 for other flat rate products. Priority Mail Express will experience increases from $1.40 to $20.80 across different zones and weight categories, with Flat Rate Envelopes increasing by $2.35.
Commercial customers will also see adjustments. For Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage in Zones 1-4, price hikes will range from $0.40 to $3.15. For Zones 5-9, these increases will be between $0.55 and $9.10. Priority Mail Flat Rate products will increase by $1.75 for large boxes and $0.85 for others. Priority Mail Express for commercial clients will see increases ranging from $1.40 to $18.20, with Flat Rate Envelopes increasing by $2.35. Parcel Select will see increases from $0.40 to $2.35 across various weight classes.
The USPS stated that this measure is a response to the expected heightened demand and additional expenses incurred during the busy fall and holiday shipping periods.
