Jarrad Branthwaite defends England teammates amid withdrawals
Jarrad Branthwaite has defended his England teammates following a series of withdrawals from the national team squad ahead of upcoming Nations League fixtures. Five key players, including Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, and Tino Livramento, have been absent from Thomas Tuchel's squad due to injuries. Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also among the notable absences, with James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White called up as replacements.
Branthwaite, an Everton centre back who earned his first England cap over two years ago, dismissed suggestions that players prioritize their club commitments over representing their country. "I think all players are fully committed to playing for England," Branthwaite stated. "I can speak for myself how much of a privilege it is to be in the England squad and to represent England, so I think it'll be the same for all the players."
Branthwaite himself has faced injury challenges. Shortly after his initial England appearance, he was linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2024, but a proposed transfer did not materialize. Subsequent injuries, including a groin operation and a thigh problem, sidelined him until October. Last season, a hamstring injury delayed the start of his campaign until January, and another setback in April limited him to just 10 Premier League appearances.
Following a summer focused on holistic fitness, Branthwaite has played every minute of Everton's opening five Premier League matches this season. His return to the England setup marks his first call-up under Tuchel. "When I went off with the injury (in April) I was devastated after the amount of times I’ve come back from it, and for it to happen again," he said. "To be called back up to the England squad means everything to me. All the hard work that went into the rehab to get to this point, it makes it worthwhile. I’m buzzing to be back in the England set-up."
Branthwaite's inclusion is seen as a step towards challenging for a starting place alongside Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa in Tuchel's lineup. He shared that Tuchel's primary advice was to "come in and express yourself." "Every time you get the opportunity you’ve got to show the best account of yourself to give yourself the best possible chance to be in the squad and in the team for the future," Branthwaite added. "That starts with every training session, every chance you step on the pitch and hopefully I can do that."
England is scheduled to face Spain in their first Nations League fixture at Wembley on Saturday. This will be followed by two matches against the Czech Republic, with a game against Croatia away also part of the extended international break.
