US Opioid Crisis Continues Despite Declining Overdose Deaths

Generations of Americans have been impacted by the ongoing opioid crisis, which saw overdose deaths decline to around 70,000 last year from a peak of 110,000 in 2022. Despite this decrease, the crisis is far from over, as the nature of the drugs involved has shifted, presenting new challenges.

Synthetic opioids, which are more potent and readily available, have significantly altered the drug landscape. Karen, a former heroin user who is now 17 years into her recovery and works as a recovery advocate, noted that the current drugs on the street are more dangerous than what she encountered during her addiction. She shared that the crisis has deeply affected her family.

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville spoke with Karen, highlighting her journey from heroin addiction to helping others overcome similar struggles. The shift towards synthetic opioids like fentanyl means that even small amounts can be lethal, and their widespread availability makes them a constant threat. This transformation in the drug supply complicates efforts to combat addiction and reduce overdose fatalities.
