The US Open has been a source of frustration for many attendees this year, particularly concerning transportation issues as they leave the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Spectators have reported eye-watering surge pricing, lengthy wait times for rideshares, and heavy traffic congestion when exiting the stadium, especially after late-night matches.
This year's transit troubles have been exacerbated by a change in the designated rideshare pick-up and drop-off location. Organizers moved the lot from its traditional spot at the Unisphere to Lot H at the New York Hall of Science, a change that has reportedly caused confusion and widespread complaints.
One attendee, Silvio Silva, and his friend Patrick Kana, described their experience after a match that concluded at 3:33 a.m. A ride from the venue to Valley Stream, Long Island, which normally costs around $55, ranged from $197.97 for an UberXL to $283.99 for an UberX with priority pickup. Silva noted that they eventually walked a short distance to another lot to secure a ride for a more reasonable $56.
Eleanora Srugo, a real estate broker, characterized the rideshare pickup zone as a "s--t show." She opted for a $120 flat fee from a nearby yellow cab to avoid the commotion, but even taxis were reportedly stuck in traffic for extended periods.
Ektaa Dutt, a digital creator, highlighted the significant wait times for rideshares, sometimes up to 45 minutes, stating that the delays are "not worth it" given the added traffic exiting the grounds. She acknowledged the USTA's attempt to streamline transit but felt the current demand at the venue was overwhelming the system.
Uber acknowledges the challenges, with senior representative Josh Gold attributing the high fares to a combination of New York's high operating costs and surging demand during a major event. Gold stated that the rideshare pickup area is managed by event and public safety officials, not Uber, and that the company has been unable to reach an agreement with USTA on logistics to improve the fan experience.
Some attendees have found ways to mitigate the costs, such as scheduling rides in advance. Lauren Cobello, who regularly attends the US Open, advises scheduling a pickup for 30 minutes after the match ends to secure lower rates, as prices typically jump immediately after play concludes.
