US Military Strikes Suspected Drug Boat in Caribbean, Four Killed

The U.S. military announced it conducted an attack on a boat suspected of smuggling drugs in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. This operation is part of the Trump administration's ongoing campaign against alleged traffickers in Latin America, which began in September 2025.

According to U.S. Southern Command, the strike targeted a vessel along known smuggling routes. This incident brings the total number of individuals killed in similar U.S. military boat strikes to at least 235 across 70 operations. The military released a video that appeared to show an explosion destroying a moving vessel, described as a go-fast boat. However, the military did not present evidence confirming the presence of drugs on board the targeted vessel.

The administration has been pursuing agreements with allied nations to expand its operations to land-based targets across multiple Latin American countries. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated in August that Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras had purportedly agreed to permit joint U.S. military operations against criminal groups within their territories, though Guatemala has since denied such an agreement. Ecuador initiated similar joint missions with the U.S. in March.

President Donald Trump has characterized the U.S. involvement as an "armed conflict" with cartels in Latin America, justifying these actions as a necessary measure to curb drug flow into the United States and reduce overdose deaths. Critics have noted that the administration has provided limited evidence to substantiate its claims regarding the elimination of smugglers.
