US Military Strikes Suspected Drug Boat in Caribbean, Four Killed

The U.S. military conducted an operation Saturday against a boat suspected of drug smuggling in the Caribbean Sea, resulting in the deaths of four people. This action is part of an ongoing campaign by the U.S. government targeting alleged traffickers in Latin America.

According to U.S. Southern Command, the strike occurred along known smuggling routes. This incident brings the total number of people killed in U.S. military boat strikes to at least 231 across 69 operations since the administration began its focus on combating what it terms "narcoterrorists" nearly a year ago. The military has not provided specific evidence to confirm that the targeted vessel was carrying drugs. A video released by the military appeared to show a boat followed by a flash.

The administration has been pursuing agreements with allied nations to expand its operations against criminal groups onto land in various Latin American countries. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated last month that Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras had agreed to joint U.S. military operations on their territory, though Guatemala has denied reaching such a deal. Ecuador initiated similar joint missions with the U.S. in March.

President Donald Trump has characterized the situation as an "armed conflict" with cartels in Latin America and has defended the strikes as a necessary measure to reduce drug flow into the United States and combat fatal overdoses. However, evidence supporting the administration's claims about smugglers killed has been limited.
