US Military Investigates Mysterious Freezer Failures Amid Cyberattack Concerns

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division is investigating a series of unexplained freezer and refrigerator failures at military bases that resulted in spoiled food. Investigators from the Army CID’s Cyber Field Office are collaborating with the Defense Commissary Agency and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service to pinpoint the cause of the malfunctions, which occurred in August.

Concerns have been raised that the incidents could be the result of a cyberattack. Army CID is also working with French law enforcement to assess whether these events are connected to refrigeration outages experienced by French supermarkets.

In late August, at least six commissaries, the on-base stores where military personnel shop, reported refrigeration system failures. According to Reuters, one incident at Fort Huachuca in Arizona involved a freezer that malfunctioned and began heating its contents, rendering the food spoiled. In other cases, refrigeration units' temperatures were reportedly raised overnight, leading to significant food spoilage by morning.

These events in the U.S. follow a similar situation in France several weeks prior, where a suspected cyberattack reportedly affected hundreds of supermarkets. Hackers allegedly manipulated refrigerator systems, causing temperatures to rise to extreme levels and leading to widespread food spoilage and, in some instances, fires.

The investigation aims to determine the cause of the refrigeration failures and whether a coordinated cyberattack was responsible, though no definitive conclusions have been publicly announced.
